What is Bhakti Yoga?

While many people first encounter yoga through movement and physical postures, Bhakti focuses on the heart. It is a path of connection, using music, mantra, and shared experience to cultivate joy, presence, and a sense of unity with something greater than ourselves.

Rather than striving for perfection or performance, Bhakti invites us to soften and participate. It is about expressing gratitude, opening the heart, and connecting with others through sound and intention. For centuries, people have practiced Bhakti through singing sacred chants, storytelling, poetry, and devotional music as a way to quiet the mind and awaken a deeper sense of peace and belonging.

At its core, Bhakti Yoga reminds us that spiritual practice can be joyful, communal, and deeply human.

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is one of the most beloved practices within the Bhakti tradition. It is a form of musical meditation where participants sing simple mantras or sacred phrases together, usually in a call-and-response style led by a musician or facilitator.

You do not need singing experience or knowledge of Sanskrit to participate. The melodies are intentionally simple and repetitive so that everyone can join in easily. Over time, the rhythm and repetition of the music help the mind settle and allow participants to drop into a more meditative and heartfelt state.

Kirtan often includes instruments such as harmonium, guitar, drums, and percussion, creating an uplifting atmosphere where the room fills with shared voices and sound. Some people choose to sing loudly, others quietly, and some simply sit and listen. All forms of participation are welcome.

Many people describe the experience as surprisingly powerful. Singing together can create a sense of warmth, connection, and emotional release. It is less about performance and more about collective presence.
